STEM - Science ~ Technology ~ Engineering ~ & Math

Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is with great pride and excitement that I share some extraordinary news with you: Mary V. Wheeler Elementary has officially been designated as a Tennessee STEM School for the 2025–2030 school years!

This recognition affirms what we have long known: our school is a place where innovation, hands-on learning, and a passion for discovery are deeply rooted in everything we do. Being named a STEM-designated school means that our students will now have even greater access to high-quality, immersive learning in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. It’s a powerful step toward equipping our young learners with the skills they need to thrive in an ever-evolving world.

From learning computer science and coding their own programs, to collecting and reporting weather data to Tennessee Emergency Management officials, our students are using science and technology to make a difference. Their public service announcements on fire prevention during drought conditions have raised awareness in our community, while their efforts in our annual canned food drive have supported the local food bank and taught the value of compassion and service.

This moment, however, is not just a celebration of our present; it’s a reflection of our past. I believe Mary V. Wheeler herself would be incredibly proud to see this legacy honored and elevated. From its earliest days, our school was ahead of its time. Mr. Carl Boynton and Ms. Thelma Boynton, two pillars of our founding faculty and the first STEM ambassadors of Wheeler Elementary, believed deeply in giving students access to the tools of tomorrow. Whether it was early programs in photography, broadcasting, or other innovative offerings, they ensured that students on the Cumberland Plateau were never left behind.

In many ways, Mary V. Wheeler Elementary was “STEM before STEM was even a word.” That pioneering spirit still drives us today, and this designation is a powerful confirmation that we are not only honoring that legacy, we are building on it.

We thank you for your continued support as we take this exciting next step in our school’s journey. This is more than just a win for Mary V. Wheeler Elementary; it’s a bright, promising future for every one of our students.

With gratitude and excitement,

Michael B. McAnally, Ed.S.
